Brunei Darussalam Reiterates Support for Cambodia's ASEAN Chairmanship

PHNOM PENH: The Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, has reiterated Brunei’s full support to Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in steering ASEAN through many monumental world challenges today. The Bruneian Second Minister of Foreign Affairs relayed this message during a virtual meeting with Cambodian Foreign Minister, DPM Prak Sokhonn, on Thursday, 21 July.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Cambodia, the videoconference meeting between Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof and DPM Prak Sokhonn was held to discuss some issues related to the upcoming 55th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and related meetings, as well as to touch base on further deepening Cambodia and Brunei’s bilateral ties, as the two countries mark the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations this year.

During the meeting, the Bruneian Second Minister of Foreign Affairs shared his views on how to enhance dialogue partnerships between ASEAN and the United Kingdom and New Zealand, for which Brunei is acting as the ASEAN Country-Coordinator. He also extended his strong encouragement to DPM Prak Sokhonn, for his untiring efforts as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, and shared his views and thoughts on how ASEAN could further advance the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC).

In response, DPM Prak Sokhonn thanked his Bruneian counterpart for his country’s support to Cambodia, and shared his views on various multilateral issues and cooperation of common interest.

Additionally, both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation for the sake of peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and beyond. Both Ministers also touched on Cambodia and Brunei’s bilateral relations and close friendship over the past three decades, which they both agreed had continuously strengthened in various areas for the mutual benefit of both nations.
